The reconstruction work of the Adwa Bridge has begun.
Reconstruction of the Adwa Bridge, which has been closed to traffic due to sustained structural damage, has officially begun.
The bridge had been providing service for many years. However, following damage identified at its base—and to prevent potential risk to lives and property—the road was closed to all vehicular traffic starting August 31, 2026 (Nehase 25, 2018 E.C.).
According to the Addis Ababa City Roads Authority (AACRA), the reconstruction work has now kicked off following the completion of essential feasibility studies and design preparations.
Currently, excavation work is underway on both sides of the main bridge as well as the steel pedestrian bridges. Additionally, necessary utility relocation tasks—specifically shifting electric lines for the construction—are actively being carried out.
The 24-meter-long bridge project is being undertaken by contractor M.C.G., with consulting and supervision services provided by Incirad Civil System Engineering.
Funded entirely by the Addis Ababa City Administration, a strict 5-month timeline has been established to complete the full reconstruction of the Adwa Bridge.
